Official documents from the European Commission confirm that Ukraine has been granted an exemption by the EU to use a portion of the initial approximately €5.9 billion in drone procurement funds to purchase drone components from countries other than those eligible suppliers. This funding is part of a €90 billion support loan provided by the EU to Ukraine. While EU funds, in principle, require priority to be given to products from Europe, Ukraine, and approved partners, the exceptional purchase was approved due to the rapid depletion of Ukrainian drones and the inability of Europe and its allies to supply certain key components in a timely and sufficient manner. This also highlights the continued dependence of Europe's defense supply chain on the manufacturing industries of other countries.
