India has told shipowners, ship managers and crewing agencies to halt deployment
of Indian seafarers to vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz until further
notice, the Directorate General of Shipping said on Wednesday evening, as a
precaution after a recent spike in attacks in the waterway heightened
Iran‑US tensions. One recent attack killed an Indian seafarer. The International
Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO estimate more than 310,000 Indian seafarers work
on merchant ships, making India the world’s second‑largest supplier of
seafarers.
