On the 16th, Brazil foreign minister Vieira said the U.S. move to impose 25%
tariffs on certain Brazilian imports has no factual basis and is political
motivated, calling the Section 301 investigation under the Trade Act of 1974 a
unilateral U.S. procedure and the measures unacceptable. Vice President Alckmin
said the tariffs are unfair and baseless, adding that U.S. data over the past 15
years show a trade surplus with Brazil and that the Section 301 rationale rests
on false grounds.
