According to filings and two people familiar with the matter, Samsung
Electronics America has cut roles in its display, mobile and other
consumer-electronics units, mainly in New Jersey and Texas. About 739 positions
at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey site are affected as SEA prepares to move
its U.S. headquarters to Texas. SEA covers consumer electronics and does not
include Samsung’s chip unit. The company said most affected employees were
offered transfer opportunities; others were eliminated. One person who said they
were laid off put the number at roughly 100 dismissed at SEA’s Plano, Texas
office, including mobile staff. While tied to the HQ relocation, the cuts
underscore a divergence within Samsung: the chip division has seen record profit
gains while consumer electronics are under pressure from rising chip costs.
