The U.S. Commerce Department confirmed Tuesday that Chris Fall, director of the
Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center, resigned three months
after assuming leadership of the federal AI testing agency. Fall was appointed
in April after the office was reorganized from the U.S. AI Safety Institute. The
center develops AI testing and evaluation capabilities and support standards for
advanced AI systems. His sudden departure leaves the federal AI testing agency
temporarily without a formal head as the administration debates next steps on AI
standards and regulation.
