China Mobile deputy GM Li Huidi said at an AI forum that optical interconnects
have natural advantages—high bandwidth, low latency, low loss, long-distance
transmission and high-density integration—and could help overcome intra-cluster
communications bottlenecks and improve coordination among GPUs, AI chips and
servers. Optical computing could unlock new energy-efficiency gains and
specialized computing paradigms. Optical and electrical technologies are
complementary across layers and scenarios. China Mobile plans to build
high-quality compute infrastructure, increase intelligent-compute supply and
green operations, foster an open AI industry ecosystem to drive deeper
integration of large models with industry, and support and validate frontier
technologies such as optical interconnect and optical computing in real-world
scenarios.
