[ING: UK Begins to Feel the Impact of "Chip Inflation"] ING economist James Smith stated in a report that UK inflation is beginning to feel the effects of the global memory chip shortage, driven by surging demand for AI. Although overall inflation fell to a 15-month low in June, core inflation was slightly higher than expected. It appears that "chip inflation" has swept through the UK; portable device prices surged 22% month-on-month, the largest month-on-month change since the data series began in 2015. However, against the backdrop of cooling food and services inflation, the Bank of England seems unlikely to raise interest rates in the near term. We expect the Bank of England to keep interest rates unchanged throughout 2026, then consider a gradual rate cut starting next spring.

South Korea's government met with major exporters on the 21st at the Seoul government complex to discuss steps to stabilize the won, Second Vice Minister of Economy and Finance Heo Jang said. Heo said the won weakened to around 1,550 won per dollar before June's exporters' talks but has since recovered to the high-1,400s after exporters stepped up foreign-currency conversion, shipbuilders increased forward dollar sales, and SK Hynix's ADR issuance brought capital inflows, easing FX supply-demand imbalances. Heo expects further improvement in H2 as semiconductor exports pick up. Attending firms including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Hyundai Motor and Kia, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries told the government they will further coordinate to sustain recent FX supply-demand improvements and keep the foreign-exchange market stable.
