South Korea's government met with major exporters on the 21st at the Seoul government complex to discuss steps to stabilize the won, Second Vice Minister of Economy and Finance Heo Jang said. Heo said the won weakened to around 1,550 won per dollar before June's exporters' talks but has since recovered to the high-1,400s after exporters stepped up foreign-currency conversion, shipbuilders increased forward dollar sales, and SK Hynix's ADR issuance brought capital inflows, easing FX supply-demand imbalances. Heo expects further improvement in H2 as semiconductor exports pick up. Attending firms including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Hyundai Motor and Kia, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries told the government they will further coordinate to sustain recent FX supply-demand improvements and keep the foreign-exchange market stable.
