A June heatwave across western and central Europe reduced UK working hours and
cost the economy an estimated £1.15bn (~$1.5bn), the LSE Grantham Research
Institute and the European-Mediterranean Climate Change Center said. A survey of
1,950 adults found high temperatures disrupted workplaces, commuting and sleep;
during the week of June 22 average working time fell by about 30 minutes. The
study says the June event was the most severe heatwave on record in Europe, UK
temperature records were broken three consecutive days, and about 2,700 deaths
were recorded in Wales and England.
