At 17:00 on July 23 a tropical depression centered about 760 km east‑northeast
of Manila (17.4°N, 127.5°E) had maximum winds near the center of 15 m/s
(Beaufort 7) and central pressure 1000 hPa. It is moving west‑northwest at 30–35
km/h and is expected to strengthen into Typhoon No.12 (Hongxia) within 12 hours.
The system should enter the northeastern South China Sea on the night of July
24–25, approach the Guangdong–Fujian coast and is forecast to make landfall
between Zhuhai (Guangdong) and Zhangpu (Fujian) between the evening of July 25
and the morning of July 26 with winds of 33–40 m/s (force 12–13, typhoon). After
landfall it is expected to turn north‑northwest and weaken.
