Colombian government issued a decree on the 23rd declaring a one-year national
disaster to pre-position resources against a likely intensification of El Nifio
in coming months, warning of potential severe, persistent shocks to water
resources, food supplies and public electricity services. The decree tasks
Colombia’s National Disaster Risk Management Unit to coordinate national, local
and private-sector efforts focused on water conservation and supply, food
security, energy transitions for rural and low-income households, public-health
surveillance and forest-fire prevention.
