Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told an interdepartmental crisis management
center on July 25 that this year’s wildfires have burned nearly 98,000 hectares,
a record. Gironde alone has exceeded 40,000 hectares. Fires in Gironde, Landes
and Var remain uncontained. Nunez urged the public to avoid Gironde fire zones
to allow firefighting operations. Firefighters and the military are
concentrating on defending fire perimeters and are prepared for afternoon wind
shifts to prevent further spread.
