On the 27th Seoul Central District Court found former president Yoon Suk-yeol
guilty under the Public Official Election Act, sentencing him to 18 months in
prison with a three-year suspension. The court said Yoon made false statements
during his People Power Party presidential campaign and violated the law over
comments related to a meeting with a shamanic figure. Under South Korean law, a
final conviction carrying a prison term (or a fine of 1 mln KRW or more) would
void his election. Convicted candidates must return campaign expense
reimbursements previously paid by the National Election Commission; for
party-nominated presidential candidates, the nominating party is responsible for
repayment.
