CME officially launched US single-stock futures today, covering 55 companies including SpaceX, offering standard contracts of 100 shares and micro contracts of 10 shares. The contracts are cash-settled and trade almost all day, allowing investors to establish long, short, or hedging positions without borrowing shares. For SpaceX, this doesn't change the company's fundamentals but adds a new pricing channel, allowing pre-market, after-hours, and major news events to be reflected in futures prices more quickly. SpaceX's free float is limited since its IPO, and its share price has clearly fallen from its peak. Ortex estimates that approximately 56% of its free float is currently being lent out, and short positions are still increasing. The company's first post-IPO earnings report is scheduled for August 4th, followed by a share lock-up period. Therefore, the significance of the first day of single-stock futures trading is not to provide new conclusions about price movements, but rather to make it easier for short sellers, hedgers, and leveraged funds to enter the market. The correlation between spot prices, futures prices, and earnings expectations may amplify short-term volatility.
