Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said on the 27th that if Japan
introduces nuclear weapons amid its accelerating remilitarization, it would pose
threats and challenges to Russia's national security and regional endangerment
stability. Responding to Defense Minister Koizumi's recent remark that "Japan
should discuss nuclear-related policy without taboo," Zakharova said Japan is a
"nuclear-threshold" state that could produce warheads in a short time if it
decided to do so. She added Koizumi's comments cannot be justified as "defense"
because no country threatens Japan's sovereignty or territorial integrity,
warned that Japanese militarist sentiment is reviving, and urged Japan to
remember WWII lessons and return to a path of peaceful development.
