An analyst says Netanyahu is likely to press Trump to push for Iranian regime
change at Tuesday’s White House meeting. Trump is unlikely to agree, and US
domestic politics make a military option politically unpopular, leaving
Netanyahu’s leverage is unclear. Prior Trump–Netanyahu meetings have often been
followed by escalations with Iran; whether that pattern repeats is uncertain.
Israel remains dissatisfied with a US memorandum of understanding with Iran and
Israeli officials want Netanyahu to press Trump on Iran’s ballistic-missile and
nuclear programmes. The likely US response, the analyst says, is that military
options are limited unless Washington decides to occupy Iran — an option no one
is seriously considering.
