Japan established a Major Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters after a strong
earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on the afternoon of July 28, the
government said. The Chief Cabinet Secretary said the Japan Self-Defense Forces
have begun rescue operations in the quake-affected area at the request of
Kumamoto prefectural authorities.
