Cuba's foreign ministry on the 28th condemned remarks by Colombia's
president-elect proposing to close Colombia's embassy in Havana and sever
diplomatic relations after taking office, saying the plan "succumbs to US
pressure on Cuba," "lacks reasonable basis" and is not in Colombia's national
interest. The statement warned that implementing the move would violate the
founders' ideal of Latin American and Caribbean unity and would expose the
incoming Colombian government as yielding to a policy aimed at sowing division
and conflict between the two countries.
