Kenya has ordered Tata Chemicals' Magadi soda ash plant, Africa's largest, to
suspend operations, citing unpaid mining royalties and multiple regulations
breaches. Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Minister Hassan Joho said
the company must submit full documentation proving it has met statutory
obligations and settled outstanding dues before production can resume.
government also flagged failures to implement value‑addition and skills‑transfer
plans, insufficient employment of Kenyan citizens, and non-compliance with
export declarations, local procurement and environmental rules. Tata Chemicals
said it is "fully compliant with all relevant regulations" and will work with
authorities to resolve the issues. USGS data show Kenya is the world’s
fourth-largest producer of natural soda ash, accounting for about 1% of global
output.
