At an Aug. 4 briefing the China Meteorological Administration said 6–7 typhoons
are expected to form in the northwest Pacific and South China Sea in August,
above the 5.6 seasonal average; 2–3 are likely to make landfall or noticeably
affect China, close to the 2.3 average. Overall intensity is expected to be
stronger than normal, with a risk of strong typhoons tracking north and
impacting northern China.
