China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) expert Li Yanwei said on social
media that China saw about 165 new distinct vehicle models in Jan–Jun 2026. The
widely circulated 500–600 figure aggregates models with different configurations
and derivatives and is therefore not a rigorous count. Li noted a single new
model with multiple trim/configuration options can be counted as one model or
several variants. Several media outlets used a broad counting method, citing
roughly 550 new vehicles in Jan–May and over 600 in 1H, inflating apparent
new-supply estimates.
