Israeli media report Mossad director Gofman has removed two senior officers —
the head of intelligence and the head of Iran affairs — after a Mossad‑CIA plan
to instigate regime change in Iran failed to proceed as expected. The plan
reportedly envisaged US and Israeli air support, Kurdish ground forces entering
Iran and assistance from Iranian minority groups to topple the leadership and
install replacement politicians. Media reports in May said US‑Israeli planners
had preselected former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the preferred leader in
the event of hostilities; the operation collapsed on day one after an Israeli
airstrike on Ahmadinejad’s Tehran residence, intended to kill his guards,
wounded him and prompted his suspicion.
