Ali Akbar Dareini, researcher at Iran’s Center for Strategic Studies, said Iran
and Oman are close to an agreement on future management of the Strait of Hormuz,
but US pressure on Oman to align with Washington remains the main obstacle.
Dareini said Iran views future control of the strait as vital to its national
security. He added that in recent months the US struck Iran, which Tehran says
were launched from bases in the region, and described the Iran–Oman talks as a
diplomatic opening for Washington to acknowledge Iran and Oman as the finalists of the
strait’s future. He said the Strait of Hormuz cannot return to its pre-conflict
state and that regional geopolitics have changed.
