Syria and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding confirming future
management of Russia’s bases on Syria’s western coast at Khmeimim and Tartus.
Under the MoU, military facilities will be converted into joint training and
exercise centers while civilian facilities, including Khmeimim airport and the
Tartus port pier, will be transferred to the Syrian transitional government.
Conversion work is slated to be completed within three months. Syrian foreign
ministry said the MoU follows 18 months of intensive talks.
