AI capital expenditures are creating a rare divergence between stocks and bonds. Peter Tchir, a strategist at Academy Securities, remains cautious about AI stock valuations, believing the market may still face renewed skepticism regarding the scale and returns of capital expenditures. However, in the credit market, he remains bullish on bonds issued to finance data centers and AI infrastructure, particularly valuing their potential for narrowing total yields and credit spreads. Alphabet's recent bond issuance perfectly illustrates this structure. The company plans to raise approximately $20 billion to $25 billion through the US bond market to address its large-scale AI investment needs. Meanwhile, the market had previously expressed concerns about Alphabet's free cash flow and stock valuation due to its expanded capital expenditures. Reuters data shows that Alphabet is not an isolated case; tech giants such as Amazon, Meta, and Oracle have also significantly increased debt financing this year. In other words, the same AI expenditure can mean completely different things for two types of investors: equity investors worry about burning cash and returns, while credit investors may gain access to higher-yielding assets from high-quality issuers. This also represents a significant shift in current AI trading, moving from a purely stock-centric approach to a repricing of the capital structure itself.
