focus from its nuclear program to the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials say the
military told President Trump it could attempt to seize control of the strait
but the operation would be "lengthy, deadly and very costly" and "it is unclear
whether the U.S. could ultimately prevail." Military planning estimates an order
to act would produce "substantial U.S. military casualties." Officials say the
risk of such large-scale military action has factored in Trump’s deliberations
with advisers. Two European officials added Iran believes de facto control of
the strait gives it negotiating leverage and is a stronger bargaining chip than
its nuclear program.
