On the 11th, a U.S. federal judge ordered the U.S. Postal Service barred from
enforcing President Trump’s executive order that would restrict mailed ballots.
Trump issued the order on March 31 directing the Department of Homeland Security
and the Social Security Administration to compile state-by-state lists of
citizens eligible to vote and prohibiting the USPS from processing ballots from
voters not on those lists. Twenty-three Democratic-led states and Washington,
D.C., sued, arguing the order is unconstitutional. A Boston federal judge
enjoined the order on June 25; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit
upheld that injunction on July 25. The administration subsequently filed an
emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
