Installed capacity has nearly doubled over 10 years to about 552 GW, with non‑fossil sources now exceeding 300 GW. The government plans roughly $109bn of transmission investment through 2032, but grid build‑out is slower and more complex than solar plant construction: transmission corridors require land, rights‑of‑way, towers, transformers and multiple approvals, and incomplete towers can stall entire lines. Generation growth has kept pace with demand growth, but delivery constraints heighten near-term demand for transmission, storage and financially sustainable distribution to make power available where and when needed.
