Despite a sharp rise in oil costs, Japanese corporate profits beat analyst forecasts at the highest rate in five years, suggesting the equity rally may be entering a broader phase. For the quarter to June, roughly 71% of companies exceeded estimates and combined net profit for Japan's 500 largest firms rose to ¥21 tln (about $132 bln) from about ¥18 tln a year earlier. Profitability improved sharply: TOPIX constituents' profit margin is estimated at 9.3%, the highest in more than 30 years. While last quarter's gains were concentrated in tech and AI-related names, the latest results show earnings growth widening as firms pass higher costs to customers; a Resona Holdings strategist said Domestic-demand companies also beat expectations and investor interest has broadened.
