Japan will provide an additional ¥150 billion (~$944m) to support chip foundry Rapidus, boosting spending to help it compete with TSMC and other contracts manufacturers, a source said. METI will seek further funding for the government-backed joint venture in its fiscal 2027 budget. Rapidus, founded in 2022, targets production of leading-edge 2nm chips by 2027 and aims to reduce Japan's reliance on TSMC. Policymakers view Rapidus's success and semiconductor independence in AI, robotics and quantum technologies as a national-security priority.
