Brazilian President Lula phoned U.S. President Trump on Friday to urge
restarting negotiations over U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods ahead of Brazil's
October election, the Brazilian government said. Lula rejected U.S. allegations
of unfair trade practices that prompted Washington to impose 25% tariffs on many
Brazilian products, telling Trump in a call lasting just over an hour that the
accusations were "baseless." Brazil said Trump proposed government-level
meetings as soon as possible. It was the first call between the two leaders
since relations soured again in May.
