Sources say US Commerce Secretary Lutnick is dissatisfied with the near-final
US‑Canada trade draft and is pressing changes, most notably opposing a proposal
to cut Canadian auto tariffs from 25% to 15% on grounds it could weaken US
onshoring of manufacturing. His stance contrasts with earlier upbeat signals
from the White House and Canadian Prime Minister Carney; negotiators aim to
conclude terms before new tariff measures take effect. The draft reportedly
includes cuts to Canada’s steel and aluminum tariffs, adjustments to dairy
quotas and removal of some Canadian restrictions on US alcohol exports. Canadian
Trade Minister Leblanc said the sides are "very close" to an agreement.
