A severe cyclone moved into Latvia from the south on the evening of the 22nd,
bringing heavy rain and destructive winds that broke trees and branches and
severely damaged the electricity distribution network, leaving more than 180,000
customers without power. The Latvian news agency called it the most destructive
storm since January 2005. In parts of central Latvia, rainfall during the event
reached roughly half of the typical monthly total.
