Japan will propose about JPY100bn (≈$628m) in the FY2027 budget to help domestic firms buy submarine cable‑laying vessels, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications plans to include in a budget request scheduled for end‑August. The ministry would cover roughly half of procurement costs; each ship could cost more than JPY40bn. The proposal targets purchase of 3–5 vessels in FY2027, citing rising procurement costs driven by yen weakness and higher raw‑material prices. It would be Japan’s first direct government support for hull purchases and is aimed at encouraging private‑sector investment.
