Trump said the United States "desperately needs" Canadian aluminum, adding the
U.S. lacks sufficient domestic supply and that "most of our aluminum comes from
Canada." He proposed building an aluminum plant in Inola, Oklahoma on social
media, warning "if not approved, the plant will be moved elsewhere." The remarks
come as a U.S.-Canada trade dispute intensifies over Trump's 50% metals tariffs.
More than half of U.S. annual aluminum consumption is sourced from Canada; talks
last week reportedly nearly reached a deal to halt the tariffs but faced
opposition from U.S. steel and aluminum producers urging the administration not
to make concessions to Canada.
