the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is approaching the
country’s worst recorded levels; severe funding shortfalls and widespread
misinformation are hindering response efforts. U.S. CDC data show at least 5,605
infections and 2,683 deaths since the first confirmed case on May 15, figures
DRC government data largely corroborate. The current toll already exceeds the
2018–2022 outbreak that killed about 2,200, and the outbreak’s initial spread
has been faster than the 2014 West Africa epidemic, which ultimately caused more
than 11,000 deaths.
