The U.S. Commerce Department reported that the slowdown in real GDP growth in the second quarter (1.5%) compared to the first quarter (2.1%) reflected a decline in government spending and slower growth in investment and exports, but these effects were partially offset by faster consumer spending. Imports grew at a higher rate in the second quarter than in the first quarter.
