Iran foreign minister Araghchi wrote to the UN secretary-general, Security Council and member states saying the US Aug. 24 announcement of an "economic isolation" action — using secondary sanctions and restrictions on access to the US financial system — is intended to coerce other countries to end legitimate economic ties with Iran and represents extraterritorial application of US law. He warned the measures will affect basic needs including food, medicine, medical devices and energy, cited the International Court of Justice’s 2018 ruling accusing the US of violating international law, urging the Security Council and UN members to condemn and refuse unilateral coercive measures and secondary sanctions, asked the secretary-general to assess humanitarian impacts, and said Iran reserves the right to pursue accountability and compensation.
