Nvidia (NVDA.O), the world's most valuable company and a key player in the AI boom, will release its earnings report today. Here are some key highlights from its second-quarter results: ① Infrastructure Financing: Earlier this month, Nvidia announced a massive plan to free up more funds for AI infrastructure construction, including data centers and chip procurement. A week later, the chip giant announced support for a large data center project in southern Ohio. Investors have begun to worry about Nvidia getting too involved in these deals. They want to know more about what the company hopes to achieve through these financing arrangements, and how and when it will pay off. ② Vera Rubin Progress: At this week's chip industry conference, Nvidia stated that its next-generation Vera Rubin server is expected to begin shipping in the third or fourth quarter of this year. If this timeline materializes, it will be a positive sign for the company. Previously, Nvidia's previous-generation AI chip, Blackwell, was delayed for months due to design flaws requiring correction. ③ Open Models: Over the weekend, news broke that Nvidia secured a $6 billion licensing agreement with startup Poolside (a developer of open-weighted AI models) for its technology and engineering talent. This move aims to accelerate the development of Nvidia's open model, Nemotron, potentially sparking competition among cutting-edge labs and leading to increased chip procurement, thus creating a virtuous cycle of revenue for Nvidia. ④ Sales in China: Signs of easing in the world's second-largest AI market would be crucial for Nvidia's sales. ⑤ Gross Margin Pressure: Nvidia's gross margin remains around 75%, among the highest in the technology industry. However, with rising memory prices and increased competition from custom chips and new processors, customers have more choices, and Nvidia may face greater resistance in trying to pass on higher costs.
