The US Army’s Janus program has selected five nuclear firms to receive up to $2.2 billion in grants to build, own and operate microreactors at bases in North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia and New York. The Army said the move is aimed at meeting an executive order target for the first Army-regulated reactor to be operating on a military facility by September 2028. With private-sector co-investment, the Army expects to deploy more than 20 microreactors across Department of Defense installations. Federal funds will be awarded against project milestones in FY2027–FY2031; companies must provide substantial private capital. The Army says Janus is intended to de-risk and scale microreactor technology so firms can commercialize units for non-military customers, using military procurement as an initial anchor buyer.
