China's Ministry of Transport, responding to calls to cancel ETC device use, said ETC lanes are intended to raise highway throughput, improve travel experience and help reduce logistics costs. The Highway Bureau said ETC remains voluntary; frequent users may apply for devices through authorized channels, including bank branches, the official ETC mini-program and Alipay service portals, as well as other legitimate online and offline outlets.
