The Trump administration is increasing economic pressure on Iran while threatening military strikes. Former US Ambassador to Tunisia, Joey R. Hood, stated in an interview that Trump "clearly understands the limitations of military strikes," but warned that Iran will not suddenly change its behavior because of sanctions. He pointed out that the US spent two years implementing sanctions to force Iran to the negotiating table, ultimately leading to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. However, now, with fewer allies in the US's former camp and Iran knowing that Trump's goal is "regime change," a similar outcome to 2015 is unlikely to be repeated.
