Japan economic and fiscal minister KIUCHI said the FY2027 budget request should be compared with the combined scale of FY2026’s initial budget and FY2025’s supplementary budget, reflecting Prime Minister Kishida’s aim to reduce reliance on supplementary bills. Local media reported initial budget requests for the fiscal year starting next April could total about ¥143 tln (~$896bn); this compares with the current fiscal year’s initial requests of ~¥122 tln and last year’s supplementary of ¥18.3 tln, a combined ~¥140.6 tln. KIUCHI said next year’s budget should appropriately reflect inflation and wage rises, enhance growth potential and support expansion of nominal GDP. He added it is too early to say what the final total will be; the government will finalise the budget around year-end after the finance ministry reviews department submissions.
