China's new-energy passenger vehicle market in August showed record penetration but softer overall volumes; wholesale shipments remained robust while retail sales weakened. Persistently high oil prices and optimized product supply are the primary supports for EV demand, but seasonal off‑peak, weak macro consumption, a high year‑ago base and dealer inventory pressure are significant headwinds. The late‑August back‑to‑school period, normally a replacement-buying peak, failed to produce the usual rebound. CPCA says the market has moved from August's recovery channel into a bottom‑consolidation phase; a sustained peak‑season recovery will need verification in Golden September and Silver October.
