Commerce Secretary Lutnick said Wednesday the Trump administration is
considering a new round of import tariffs on semiconductors to incentivize
reshoring of chip manufacturing to the U.S. The proposal could be paired with
tariff waivers for firms that invest in U.S. production, modeled on earlier
pharma measures. The administration previously imposed 25% duties on some
advanced chips after a Commerce Department probe and ordered those tariffs in
January. The new measures could expand coverage from standalone semiconductors
to chip-containing products, potentially affecting imports of data‑center
servers and consumer electronics.
