In June, the World Gold Council surveyed 76 central banks to find out where they store their gold. The results contradicted almost all the headlines this year that claimed central banks were "repatriating their gold." The survey showed that the Bank of England remains the most popular gold storage location (57%); domestic storage is second (49%); the Bank for International Settlements ranks third at 16%; and the Swiss National Bank's share dropped from 12% the previous year to 6%. Furthermore, the proportion of central banks that increased their overseas gold storage over the past year (10%) was even slightly higher than those that increased their domestic storage (9%). Looking ahead to the next 12 months, 7% of central banks plan to increase their domestic gold storage, while 9% plan to further diversify their storage locations overseas.
