UN data show the FAO food commodity price index rose 1.9% in August from July to its highest level since end‑2022, driven by gains in cereals, sugar and dairy, the agency said Friday. Wheat prices rose 2.6% and sugar jumped 11.9% in August to their highest since end‑2022. The FAO index tracks internationally traded food and may take time to pass through to retail prices. Geopolitical tensions and increasingly frequent extreme weather have amplified supply risks in major producing regions. Wheat and corn futures are trading at multi‑year highs. Bloomberg’s AgSpot index, which tracks 10 major agricultural commodities, climbed more than 13% in August, the largest monthly increase since July 2012.
