Statistics Canada said Friday total employment fell 41.7k in August, reversing
part of a recent labor‑market recovery, while the unemployment rate held at
6.4%. Losses were concentrated in Ontario and Quebec. Public‑sector employment
fell for a third consecutive month, down roughly 20k in August and 78k since
May. Manufacturing was the only sector with meaningful gains, adding 22.1k jobs,
mostly in Ontario. Over the 12 months to August, industries relevant on US
exports posted an average layoff rate of 0.9% versus 0.7% for other industries.
