[Canada's AI Data Center Expansion Faces Local Opposition; Carney Government's Investment Plan Stalled] Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's plan to build artificial intelligence infrastructure is facing local resistance. Canada, with its lower temperatures, abundant energy resources, and ample land, has been seen as an alternative to Silicon Valley companies building data centers, but a growing number of communities are opposing the expansion of server facilities. Oakville, Ontario, and Rockieville, Alberta, have suspended data center projects for a year, and Manitoba Premier Wabu Keenew also rejected a data center construction plan near Winnipeg. Some residents are concerned about the high power consumption and noise levels of large data centers, and the potential for driving up electricity prices. The Carney government believes that data center construction helps enhance Canada's digital sovereignty and released a framework on Thursday requiring projects to create long-term local benefits, reduce environmental impact, and avoid passing on electricity costs to residents. Tech companies such as Amazon, Meta, and Anthropic have signed the relevant principles. Canada currently has five large data centers in operation, with another 159 projects announced or under construction. The government hopes to address community concerns about the distribution of energy, environmental, and economic benefits while promoting the development of AI infrastructure.
