six months at a pace not seen since the pandemic and at magnitudes comparable to
the global financial crisis nearly 20 years ago. Normally the governing party is
more optimistic, but Republican views have turned increasingly negative despite
a Republican White House, with the election two months away — another warning
sign for Trump. The University of Michigan consumer-survey director says party
confidence trends usually move in parallel but are diverging now. Republicans
had high expectations for government economic measures, including tariffs, but
have not seen inflation ease or the price declines Trump promised.
